Each sheet
of cloth is woven by one person. Each article of clothing is sewn
by one person. From the artisan to the wearer, clothing filled
with joy.
I am a designer, but I do not give detailed
instructions to those who dye the cloth nor to those who weave
it. Once in a while, I go outside with them to gaze at the scenery
or the night sky, and I describe the images I have in mind. The
rest, I leave up to their own sensitivities. In this way, the
craftsperson can delight in his or her work, and quality goods

It is not unusual for factories producing clothing
to divide up labor in efforts to improve efficiency. One person
may work sewing only sleeves, for example. In sewing Usaato clothing,
however, each entire article of clothing is basically sewn by
one person from start to finish.
We work this way because more motivation and affection go into
creation when one person is responsible for its completion. You
too can take pleasure in selecting clothing in an enjoyable environment
and relish the comfort of wearing clothes that have been made

It is said that the origin of natural dyes came
when ancient peoples discovered that fibers were easily stained
by extracts from plants they used for medicinal purposes. In an
ancient record of Chinese history, the "Classic of Documents,"
or Shujing, it is written as follows: "Herbal roots and bark
from trees make good medicine. Acupuncture and moxibustion are
better medicine. Proper diet and clothing are the best medicine."
Originally, clothing was also used as a way to heal illness, and
the origin of the Japanese word for "dosage" (which
uses the Chinese character for "clothing") is said to
come from this practice. The spirit of the plant used for dyeing
cloth enters the body either through the skin or as a fragrance.
